چکیده

We have investigated the polarization dependent loss (PDL) and the differential group delay (DGD) of mechanically induced long-period fiber gratings. A birefringence compensation method is also presented.

Investigations on birefringence effects in polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings

Step-index polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings (POFBGs) and microstructured polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings (mPOFBGs) present several attractive features, especially for sensing purposes. In comparison to FBGs written in silica fibers, they are more sensitive to temperature and pressure because of the larger thermo-optic coefficient and smaller Young’s modulus of polymer materials. (M)POF...

Polarization-dependent loss and birefringence in long-period fiber gratings.

Widely used descriptions and relationships for birefringence and polarization-dependent loss (PDL), developed primarily for ultraviolet-induced long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written in optical fiber, can be invalid for other types of LPFG. The understanding of PDL is expanded to include LPFGs with birefringence in the core only, in the cladding only, and in both the core and the cladding. ...

Polarization mode dispersion and polarization dependent loss in optical fiber systems

In this paper we examine the statistics of combined polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and polarization dependent loss (PDL) and the impact on pulses in optical fiber systems. The probability density functions of PDL, of the differential group delay’s (DGD) real and imaginary part and of the angle between the principal states of polarization (PSPs) are investigated by numerical simulations. The...

A novel design of tunable PMD compensator using sampled fiber Bragg gratings with uniform grating period [5642-34]

With the fluctuation of the environmental factors, such as temperature, wind, and atmospheric pressure, the birefringence of a fiber changes along the fiber link and the effects of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) are random and time-varying, which makes it necessary to design a tunable and adaptive Fiber communication; Optical fiber; Fiber Bragg grating; Differential group delay; Dispersion ...

PMD Characterization on an Active Fiber Link: Final Report

Signal degradation due to polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) effects may become significant for signaling rates of 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s, and beyond. To assess the utility of various PMD mitigation schemes, temporal and spectral measurements of differential group delay (DGD) were made on 95 km of buried standard single-mode fiber over an 86-d period to determine the distribution and rate of change o...
